Dr. Caroline’s Guide to Brushing Kids' Teeth

Dr. Caroline’s Guide to Brushing Kids' Teeth

We know that getting your little one to brush their teeth isn’t always easy—sometimes it feels like a battle just to get them to open their mouth! But don’t worry, with a few simple tricks, you can turn brushing into a fun and positive part of their daily routine. Here are my top tips to help make brushing easy.

Start Early

The moment that first tiny tooth pops up, it’s time to start brushing! The earlier you introduce brushing, the easier it is for your child to accept it as a normal part of their day. Plus, when you start with just one or two teeth, it’s quick and easy—so there’s no big struggle. As more teeth come in, they’ll already be pros at brushing!

Choosing the Right Toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste is often recommended, but let’s be real—most little kids don’t know how to spit it out yet! If you’re worried about them swallowing too much fluoride, try a toothpaste with hydroxyapatite instead. This natural mineral actually makes up our teeth and helps rebuild enamel, making it a safe and effective option for kids. One brand I love is Happy Tooth—it’s safe to swallow and helps keep those tiny teeth strong.

Making Brushing Fun

Brushing doesn’t have to be a chore! Here are some ways to make it something your child actually looks forward to:

  • Start when they have just a few teeth—it’s easier and sets them up for success.
  • Let them pick out a special toothbrush and a fun toothpaste flavor. Happy Tooth has fun flavors like Sweet Orange, Vanilla Frosting, Mint Brownie as well as your classic Fresh Mint!
  • Play their favorite song or set a timer for two minutes to keep them engaged.
  • Take a short video of them brushing once a week so they can see their progress.
